There were 26 subcompact models on the market as recently as 2016, but the Ford Fiesta and Chevrolet Sonic have reportedly dropped out at the end of the current model year. While a number of completely revamped passenger cars will hit the road for the 2020 model years, their numbers will dwindle as buyers opt for sport utility vehicles rather than the ride of their choice. As the number of small cars in particular is rapidly thinning out, many of them are likely to be discontinued.

The Polestar Precept is one of the most watched – after cars here at Driving, and the one we’ve watched most on Driving here. The E-tron GT has an impressive Porsche Taycan-derived foundation with an all-electric powertrain and a range of electric motors. The concept car pictured above, the Audi A8 Etruscan Etron GT, is just the first of many cars to be unveiled by Audi over the next 12 months.
Swedish technology partner Volvo is set to deliver another bang for the buck at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. The Polestar Precept is a low-curved four-door coupe that sits at the back of the Volvo XC90, the company’s first all-electric sports car. Polestsar has already shown that it can design a damn attractive car – just look at its one – off review to see for yourself.
Polestar has not yet announced how fast the Precept will be, how far it will cost, or whether it will go into production at all, but one can assume that it will catch the eye – the catchy styling will be seen in future production models. It all begins in May 2020, when the prestigious brand unveils its long-awaited Alfieri high-performance flagship.
Although we know that the Alfieri will have both gasoline and all-electric options, details about the new model are scarce, although a recent photo of a camouflaged development car at the Geneva Motor Show confirmed that it will be a mid-engined supercar. The Tesla Model 3 has its first public test drive, and a new Polestar 2.0 will hit British roads in the summer.
Car buyers in the UK will be spoilt for choice as a large number of new vehicles arrive at car dealerships, but there will also be many new models. We limit ourselves to the new Golf, although the car-making giant will also have its purely electric, and there will also be a completely new version of the Golf GTI, as well as the next-generation Golf R and Golf RS.
As the automotive industry focuses on electrification, more hybrid and pure electric cars are due than ever. We expect Tesla to incorporate its latest technology for autonomous driving into the mix, but who wants to do without the right way to enjoy the ultimate ride on electric vehicles?
Finally, the young South Korean automaker, which is currently active in the US market, is expanding its range with a long-awaited new crossover. The Genesis GV80 2020 will be underpinned by the same modified rear-wheel platform that currently underpins the Genesis sedan. His first two new vehicles will both be mid-size sedans, both ready to give the class cause for concern.
Crosstown rival Chevrolet is betting its long-term partnership with Hyundai on a nameplate that has not existed in the US since 2009. With the new Seltos, Kia aims for just the right size for the SUV market.
The machine has just come from a factory in Korea that is still in operation, but it is the first of its kind in the US and one of only a handful of new models.
