Quickshifters have become accepted as an essential performance tool for all competitive solo and sidecar bike racers, as a gain of at least one metre per gearshift cannot be ignored. But, until now, downshifting has been neglected. Correct corner entry speed and vehicle stability are essential parts of putting together fast laps. | |
The TrickShifter has a patented control system that enables the driver to set up his machine to give smooth downshifts at precisely the correct engine speed, without being distracted from braking by throttle blipping or operating the clutch. The throttle can be left closed, allowing full concentration on corner entry. The system can also help prevent gearbox damage caused by badly executed downshifts. |

The upshift is triggered by a sensor fitted to the gear linkage which gauges the force applied to the gear lever in the upshift direction. |
At a preset force, a signal is sent to the control module that causes a momentary interruption in the electrical supply to the ignition coils. This unloads the transmission and allows the shift to be made. A timer restores the supply to the coils. The interrupt or kill time is typically 60 milliseconds. The upshifting system has a quarter second lockout to prevent multiple kills caused by bumpy road surfaces or stiction in the gear linkage. | |

The force sensor also triggers the downshift. By operating the gear lever only in the downshifting direction, the patented throttle blip system allows a smooth downshift to be made at all speeds. The downshift actuator spindle replaces the original engine idle adjuster screw and provides a precise throttle blip of the correct level to ensure a smooth downshift. |
